Ceramic capacitors are one of the most widely used components in electronic circuits. Their compact size, wide voltage range and excellent frequency response make them ideal for decoupling, filtering and radio frequency applications. However, not all ceramic capacitors are the same – it is important to understand the component types and dielectric materials so that you can choose the right capacitor for your project.
In this article we will explain the different types of ceramic capacitors, look at the properties of the different ceramic dielectrics and help you to find quality DRex Electronics capacitors for your project.
⚙️ What are ceramic capacitors?
Ceramic capacitors are non-polar capacitors that use a ceramic material as a dielectric between metal plates. These capacitors are characterised by
- high stability
- low ESR and ESL
- high temperature tolerance
- reasonable cost and availability

Classification by dielectric type
Ceramic capacitors are classified according to the type of dielectric used. The dielectric affects the capacitance stability, temperature characteristics and frequency characteristics.
Class I dielectric – high stability, low losses
Class I dielectrics have excellent accuracy and low temperature coefficients, making them ideal for precision circuits.
Temperature coefficient properties of dielectrics
NP0 (C0G) ±30 ppm/°C Highly stable and low loss, ideal for RF and timing circuits.
P100, N150 ±100 ppm/°C Good stability, suitable for oscillators.
✅ Use Class I dielectrics in the following applications.
- You needcapacitors that provide frequency stability
- Your circuit is used in RF, oscillator or analogue signal channels
Class II dielectrics – high capacitance density.
Class II dielectrics offer higher capacitance values in a smaller package, but at the expense of stability and linearity.
Capacitance range of the dielectric Temperature stability
X7R Average ±15 % (-55 °C to +125 °C) General purpose, analysis
X5R Average ±15 % (-55 °C to +85 °C) Portable equipment, embedded systems.
Y5V/Z5U High ±22 % to -82 % Low-cost, non-critical filtration.
✅ Use Class II dielectric in the following cases:
- Higher compact capacitance is required
- Requires a larger volume for greater compactness Requires a more compact capacity
📦 Common Ceramic Capacitor Types
Ceramic capacitors also come in different physical forms depending on your application:
✅ Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor (MLCC)
-
Most common type
-
Multiple ceramic layers stacked to increase capacitance
-
Available in SMD and through-hole packages
✅ Disc Ceramic Capacitor
-
Older style, through-hole
-
Mostly used in legacy and DIY designs
✅ High Voltage Ceramic Capacitor
-
Handles voltages from 1kV to 15kV+
-
Used in power supplies, x-ray equipment, and RF systems

🛠️ How do I read ceramic capacitor labels?
SMD ceramic capacitors typically use a three-digit code to indicate the capacitance :
- First two digits: valid number
- The first two digits are the capacitance , the first twodigits are the capacitance number.
Example: 104 = 10 × 10⁴ pF = 100 000 pF = 100nF.
It is also possible to see codes such as C0G, X7R, Y5V, etc., indicating the classification of the dielectric.
